Arctic Journey to Alaska's Bering Land Bridge
A PBS Electronic Field Trip

The PBS Electronic Field Trip, Arctic Journey to Alaska's Bering Land Bridge, invites students from around the United States to look into the lens of a small digital camcorder and see:

  • newly uncovered artifacts, evidence of human history that filled this isolated landscape.
  • the tundra grasses alive with wildflowers dancing in the summer wind.
  • birds from as far away as Southeast Asia and Africa singing their songs in the foot-tall willows that hug the sand.

Fellow travelers of PBS leave no footprints in the sand. Rather, they visit Beringia's tundra from their middle school classrooms, experiencing virtual travel to one of Earth's most remote, beautiful and significant environments, via television, the Internet and now videocassette.

In conjunction with Rowe Media, PBS and the National Parks Services, TTI has designed an educational adventure for students grades 4-9. While participating in this exciting event, students examine ancient artifacts, consider natural wonders and explore the culture of native Alaskans. Students use their skills in science, social studies, geography and more. They also have fun with a focus on using the Internet.

On-line support material includes:

  • Teacher Guides with hot links to support Web activities and research on a wide variety of sites
  • Student Guides to direct group efforts in the completion of real-world projects associated with the Bering Land Bridge in science, geography and culture
  • Three different interactive problem-solving games to stimulate interest in scientific explorations
  • An extensive collection of Internet links for student exploration
  • Opportunities to communicate electronically with experts in environmental science, geology, archaeology and culture
  • A place for students to publish their completed projects on-line

Teachable Tech’s responsibilities included:

  • Hiring, supervising and conferring with writers and teachers/consultants
  • Coordinating the researching, writing, editing and delivery of material to PBS' production staff
  • Consulting and working in conjunction with Rowe Media, PBS and the National Parks Service production staffs and Education Departments
  • Designing, implementing and revising on-line classroom support materials
